Dairy Wellbeing Workshop Offers One-of-a-Kind Insights into Animal Care
Register today for Nov. 19, 20 tour and interactive sessions

DAIRY NEWSA singular opportunity awaits dairy producers wanting to adopt practices that lead to safer animal handling and more productive herd outcomes. Presented by Professional Dairy Producers® (PDP), the upcoming Dairy Wellbeing Workshop features in-class sessions to optimize observations from the harvest-floor-to-cooler tour of American Foods Group processing facility.

Two repeating sessions of the one-day workshop will be held on Wed., Nov. 19, and Thurs., Nov. 20, at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay, Wis.  Registration begins at 8:00 a.m.; the program will conclude at 3:45 p.m. each day. All program sessions will be presented in English with simultaneous Spanish translation.

The plant tour will provide a first-hand look at how animal care impacts cow health and subsequent beef quality. The in-class sessions for each workshop include:
  • Practicing the principles: stockmanship in action.” Dr. Jennifer Van Os, PhD, associate professor and extension specialist at University of Wisconsin-Madison, will engage attendees in a hands-on, discussion-based session featuring interactive scenarios to practice and sharpen stockmanship skills. Attendees will delve into practical strategies that result in calmer cows, safer handlers and more productive herds.
  • “Every step counts: act early for healthier cows.” Presented by Dr. Laura Solano, DVM, PhD, assistant professor in the food animal production section of UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Solano will lead participants through a deep dive into practical lameness-prevention strategies, early-detection and intervention tools to employ before mobility and productivity are impacted.
  • A tour and panel discussion at American Foods Group will allow participants to interact with beef buyers, market experts and USDA meat inspectors to understand cull cow quality, the importance of carcass and body condition, and the attributes buyers and inspectors are looking for when they evaluate cattle and carcasses. A tour of the facility will trace the cull cow’s experience from harvest floor to the cooler, giving participants a real-time, behind-the-scenes view of the resulting effects of care and management practices at the farm level.
