DAIRY NEWS – Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW) is pleased to announce the next World Class Webinars Series, “Weather: more than a guess” which will be held on April 26, May 17 and June 14, 2017. This three-part series, led by weather guru and senior atmospheric scientist Eric Snodgrass, will provide an outlook for the 2017 growing season and grain markets. All webinars steam live on the respective Wednesday from 12 to 1 p.m. CST.
The first webinar, “Outlook on Spring”, will take place on Wed., Apr. 26, and will focus on the April and May weather that sets the tone for each growing season. Snodgrass will discuss factors like winter and early spring weather, U.S. drought, temperature anomalies and precipitation patterns that can affect the start of the 2017 growing season. By using the latest weather analysis and forecasting tools, attendees will learn how to forecast short-term weather events, temperature and precipitation trends that can maximize their dairy’s efficiency and ability to plan.
On May 17, the second Webinar in the series “Correlating severe weather and the U.S. grain markets”, will highlight the impact of weather change and particularly severe weather on a dairy farm. Participants will get a first-hand look at the best tools available to monitor and predict hail, straight-line winds, floods and tornadoes. With the end of the 2017 planting season in sight, Snodgrass will explore long-range projections for corn and soybean yields across the country while focusing on the June-July-August forecast and the potential for heat and moisture stress.
The final webinar, “Weather outlook for summer and fall”, scheduled for Jun. 14, will highlight the long-range weather outlooks for July and August. Along with providing rain and temperature forecasts for the next 30 days, Snodgrass will assess the current progress of the growing season and look for stressors across the country that could impact grain prices moving forward. Those attending will analyze how past weather events have moved the markets during summer and learn how to forecast excessive heat and drought, two factors that have a huge impact on a dairy operation’s input costs and ultimately, can negatively impact yields, herd health and milk production.
Eric Snodgrass is the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is also the co-founder of Global Weather and Climate Logistics, LLC., which recently merged with Agrible Inc., a precision farm management and predictive analytics company, where he serves as co-founder and senior atmospheric scientist.
