There’s Still Time! Register Today to Attend 2024 Water Tours!
Go behind the scenes to see how Wisconsin cities, farmers and more protect the state’s water resources
DAIRY NEWS – Wisconsin’s water supply affects everyone. Whether it is for drinking, cooking, bathing, recreation, manufacturing or farming, the quality and quantity of our water resources is critical to every resident in our state. The 2024 Water Tours will provide a unique opportunity for anyone interested in the state’s water supply to learn about the innovations, technology and partnerships that happen behind the scenes to protect and preserve this resource.
The 2024 Water Tours will be held on Tuesday, September 10, with stops at the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) to see how more than 640 million gallons of wastewater is treated each day and at Roden Echo Valley, LLC, a family-run dairy farm near West Bend, Wis., to see water conservation, management and recycling processes. Water quality experts and researchers will also be available during bus travel time for facilitated discussions and questions from attendees.
The tours are a collaborative effort between Professional Dairy Producers®, UW Discovery Farms®, Wisconsin Counties Association and Wisconsin Towns Association. They are designed for community members, farmers, educators, local elected officials, media, and anyone else interested in learning more about how rural, suburban and urban areas work together to solve challenges and adopt innovative practices.
“This is a tremendous opportunity to see how both practical management practices like reusing water multiple times on a dairy farm or planting buffer strips and no-till cover crops on farmland combine with innovative technologies in use at the MMSD are all part of our collaborative efforts to protect Wisconsin’s water supply,” said Shelly Mayer, executive director of PDP and dairy farmer from Slinger, Wis. “In addition to the tours, attendees will interact with water quality experts, leading researchers and other forward-thinking community members and officials to share ideas for their own communities.”
The tour bus will depart from the River Hills Park & Ride at 9:15 a.m. and return by 4:00 p.m. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. Ticket cost of $49 includes bus travel, refreshments and lunch.
To learn more about the 2024 Water Tours and to register, visit www.pdpw.org or contact PDP at 800-947-7379. Up to 3.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) per tour are available from Dairy AdvanCE.
