DAIRY NEWS – With tightening financial margins, it takes business savvy to be profitable and successful in today’s dairy industry. Producers need to know their numbers in order to make timely, well-though-out and strategic decisions for their dairy businesses. Presented by Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW), the inaugural PDPW Financial Literacy for Dairy - Level 3 training will be held March 24-25 at PDPW Headquarters in Juneau, Wis.
The PDPW Financial Literacy for Dairy series is the dairy industry’s first dairy-specific financial curriculum. The multi-level, multi-session financial development program is designed to provide dairy professionals a solid financial understanding and foundation and then stretch their thinking beyond their current comfort zone to strengthen their farm’s financial understanding and analysis potential.
The Level 3 course curriculum was authored by Dick Wittman of Wittman Consulting and faculty with TEPAP - The Executive Program for Agricultural Producers (TEPAP) faculty. Also instructed by Wittman, the two-day workshop will dig into scenario planning, performance monitoring, trend analysis, key metrics, benchmarking, growth and efficiency trade-offs, optimizing capital purchases, management of capital investments, development of protocols for sharing records, and strategies for family business governance.
“The Financial Literacy course has helped me understand what I’ll need to look for in our business statements to help set, meet and track our goals and help me understand what to look for to be more profitable and efficient,” said Clint Hodorff, dairy producer from Eden, Wis.
Space is limited to 30 attendees and an online placement test is required for entry into Level 3.

DAIRY NEWS – Dairy farming in today’s complex economic environment requires an advance skill set in business strategy and financial management. The PDPW Financial Literacy for Dairy® Series, presented by Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW), offers dairy farmers and agribusiness the knowledge, tools, and resources needed to be elite business owners and executives.
Upcoming levels and meeting dates include:
The intermediate development offered in Level 2 provides 6 days of training, focusing on an advanced understanding of accrual adjustments, projected cashflow and business analysis, enterprise profitability, cost center tracking, key performance measures, ratios and business planning.
Attendees will complete the series having mastered:
Level 2 is authored by economic and financial expert Dr. David Kohl, and instructed by Gary Sipiorski, an independent business and financial consultant, and Dr. Kevin Bernhardt, Professor of Agribusiness at UW-Platteville.
The advance development offered in Level 3 provides a two-day deep dive into the most complex concepts of business and financial strategy. The topics include scenario planning, performance monitoring, trend analysis, key metrics, benchmarking, growth and efficiency trade-offs, optimizing capital purchases, management of capital investments, and development of protocols for sharing records, and strategies for family business governance.
The inaugural release of Level 3 is authored and instructed by Dick Wittman, board chair, transition coach and former manager of a 20,000-acre crop, cattle and timber operation in northern Idaho. Wittman specializes in financial and family business management, transition planning, consultant training and conflict management.
An online placement assessment is required and determines class placement. Of each level, day one runs from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and day two reconvenes at 8 a.m. and concludes at 4 p.m. All trainings are held PDPW Training Headquarters at 820 N. Main St., Juneau, Wis.

DAIRY NEWS – The PDPW Financial Literacy for Dairy® Series is presented by Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW). The 2019-20 Series will bring together dairy farmers, veterinarians, nutritionists, and other agribusiness professionals and offer three levels of financial development training between November 2019 and March 2020, held at PDPW Headquarters, 820 N. Main St., Juneau, Wis.
The series is designed to provide attendees the financial and business understanding needed to thrive in the dairy farming business. Attendee gain a strengthened understanding of financial documentation, adjusting cash basis net income to accrual adjusted data, key ratios and analysis, cost of production, benchmarking, enterprise analysis and more.
The three trainings and respective meeting dates include:
An online placement assessment determines the students’ level of entry and each training group offers a multi-session, multi-date format, with day one running from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and day two reconvenes at 8 a.m. and concludes at 4 p.m.

The Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW) announce the 2019-20 PDPW Financial Literacy for Dairy™ Series. The multi-level, multi-session financial development program is designed to provide dairy farmers, veterinarians, nutritionists, and other agribusiness professionals a solid financial understanding and foundation and then stretch their thinking beyond current comfort.
The PDPW Financial Literacy for Dairy® program is the dairy industry’s first dairy-specific financial curriculum. Authored by Dr. David Kohl and reviewed through a first-rate financial expert taskforce and dairy producer pilot group, attendees will receive the financial skill required to successfully and confidently make strategic decisions for their businesses.
An online placement assessment will determine which level best suits the degree of the individual’s financial comprehension. Each training group offers a multi-session, multi-date format with day one running from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on day two reconvening from 8 a.m. and concluding at 4 p.m.
All trainings will take place at the PDPW Headquarters, 820 N. Main St., Juneau, Wis.
Level 1 will dive into core financial concepts such as the value of determining and developing short-term and long-term business goals and the principles of preparing annual balance sheets. Level 1 trainees will also compile a cash income statement to measure their dairy’s profitability.
Level 2 will offer an in-depth look at financial tools such as income statements, inventories, and depreciation. A study of profitability and cost-center tracking will show class trainees how to separate various parts of their operation to measure profitability of each enterprise such as raising heifers, steers and crops.
The inaugural Level 3 will cover budgeting tools for planning and performance monitoring, trend analysis, key metrics to monitor, and benchmarking. This level will stretch attendees with managing capital investment for their business, how to optimize capital purchases and protocols for sharing records.
Program trainers include Gary Sipiorski, an independent business and financial consultant; Dr. Kevin Bernhardt, Professor of Agribusiness at UW-Platteville School of Agriculture and Farm Management Specialist with UW-Extension and Center for Dairy Profitability for Level 1 & 2 instruction; and Dick Wittman, board chair, transition coach and former manager of a 20,000-acre crop, cattle and timber operation in northern Idaho for Level 3 instruction.
