On-farm Hoof Management Workshops provide “living case study”
to boost comfort, productivity of dairy herds

PDPW events to be held June 14 in New York; June 28 in Wisconsin; June 30 in South Dakota

DAIRY NEWS – Leading experts in dairy cow lameness and hoof care research will facilitate a series of on-farm interactive workshops designed for dairy managers, nutritionists, veterinarians, hoof trimmers and other key employees. The Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW) will present the 2022 Hoof Management Workshops that will explore the core factors to ensure the longevity and health of today’s top-performing dairy herds.

Each workshop will be simultaneously translated into Spanish; they’ll be presented Tue., June 14, at Ideal Dairy in Hudson Falls, New York; Tue., June 28, at Grotegut Dairy in Newton, Wisconsin; and Thu., June 30, at Driftwood Dairy in Baltic, South Dakota. Each workshop will begin with registration at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 3:45 p.m.

Each workshop will feature a series of hands-on sessions that will help dairy teams:
  • Explore the technical essentials of the footbath, including dimensions, functionality and frequencies that may help alleviate digital dermatitis and foot rot
  • Investigate risk factors afflicting maturing heifers, such as corkscrew claw and overcrowding in their growing years
  • Critically analyze the impact of facility design on cow comfort, its use and correlation with the cow’s time budget as well as human influence
  • Identify treatments and protocols for chronically challenged cows during cow and chute-side observation
  • Connect the dots between sound hoof health records and the ability to identify trends, manage progress and monitor hoof care programs to impact the dairy’s bottom line
  • Discuss practices that create continuous improvement in hoof health to reduce the strain lameness places on cows and team members

The workshop will be presented by a team of leading experts in lameness and hoof-care research. Presenters will include: Karl Burgi, founder of Save Cows® Network; Kate Creutzinger, PhD, assistant professor in dairy animal welfare at University of Wisconsin-River Falls; Marcia Endres, PhD, professor of animal science at University of Minnesota and director of graduate studies; and Roger Olson, dairy account manager for Zinpro Corporation.

“Hoof care and lameness prevention require a holistic approach, and we are excited to bring together the industry’s leading experts to help dairy teams develop a plan that works for their farm and herd,” said Cassandra Strupp, program manager with PDPW. “Hosting the workshops on top-performing dairy farms provides a living case study and opportunity for dairy producers to learn from each other and take home practical ideas to implement right away.”

The PDPW Hoof Management Workshop is accredited and approved for continuing education (CE) credits, including up to 4.25 CEs in Dairy AdvanCE (DACE) and up to 4 CEs in ARPAS credits. To learn more, or secure CE credits, visit www.DairyAdvance.org.
