Dairy Farmers to Focus on Feed Management
PDPW Hosts Dairy Tours This Week, Thur., Oct. 24 from Fond du Lac, Wis.

DAIRY NEWS – With the challenges of a wet spring, summer and now fall, the Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW) will showcase two dairy farms that have modernized their feed, storage and tracking strategies based on challenging cropping dynamics and environmental considerations.

The PDPW Dairy Tours – Feed Management, Storage & Tracking farm tours will be held Thur., October 24, departing from the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center, 625 W. Rolling Meadows Dr. in Fond du Lac, Wis., at 9:30 a.m.

Built by fellow dairy farmers leading the PDPW educational committee, the Tours were designed to offer peer-to-peer, on-farm learning.

Open to farmers and agribusiness, attendees will tour two innovative farms:

  • Second Look Holsteins, LLC, Eden, Wis. The Hodorff family will share their successes in using a forage diet of only corn silage and Western dry hay.  Attendees will see the FeedWatch® system and tracking of feed inventory in action, as well as dry matter and ration changes.  The family will also demonstrate pile densities, face temperatures and FeedWatch accuracy reports that monitor and communicate with employees to produce the farm’s quality feed.  Finally, the tour will showcase the farm’s feed pad, which collects 100% of runoff.

  • Vir-Clar Farms Fond du Lac, Wis.  Learn how the Boyke families use a TMR Tracker™ software system to manage feed inventory and monitor feed costs. The farm also uses a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) in the feed kitchen to control bin ingredients and mixing commands, where data is automatically relayed from the stationary mixer to the feed truck for delivery, and delivery verification follows.

The lunch roundtable discussion will feature the farm’s owners for insights from Corey and Clint Hodorff, Second-Look Holsteins, LLC, and Grant Grinstead, Vir-Clar Farms. The panel will also include Andy Skwor, Agricultural Services Team Leader, MSA Professional Services, Inc., Baraboo, Laurie Winkelman, Dairy Nutritionist, Vita Plus, and Steve Woodford, Dairy Nutrition Consultant, Nutrition Professionals Inc.
Limited to 40 registrations, register at www.pdpw.org or 1-800-947-7379 to secure your seat.  Follow along digitally in advance of and during the event by following @dairyPDPW and using #PDPWFeedTours on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

Dairy Tours to Focus on Feed Management, Storage and Tracking Systems
PDPW to Host Tours at Second Look Holsteins, LLC and Vir-Clar Farms on Oct. 24

DAIRY NEWS – Blending a ration for top production is an ongoing challenge for dairy producers; a difficult growing season this year makes it an even-more ambitious task. A daylong chartered bus tour hosted by the Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW) will showcase feeding strategies at two successful Fond du Lac County dairies.  The PDPW Dairy Feed Management, Storage, and Tracking Tours will be held Thur., October 24, departing from the Radisson Hotel and Conference Center, 625 W. Rolling Meadows Dr. in Fond du Lac, Wis., at 9:30 a.m.

Attendees will tour the innovative and tailor-made feed storage area at Vir-Clar Farms, Fond du Lac, Wis., where the Boyke families use a TMR Tracker software system to manage feed inventory and monitor feed costs. At Second Look Holsteins, LLC, Eden, Wis., the Hodorff families will share their experience of feeding a consistent ration year-round when using only corn silage and Western dry hay as forages.

The lunch roundtable discussion will feature insights from Corey Hodorff, Second Look Holsteins, LLC, Grant Grinstead, Vir-Clar Farms, and Andy Skwor, Agricultural Services Team Leader, MSA Professional Services, Inc., Baraboo.

“The tour is a great opportunity for producers to see firsthand what type of feed management practices are helping producers remain cost-effective in today’s economic market,” said Shelly Mayer, PDPW Executive Director. “Hearing from consultants and farmers themselves may spark new ideas to add value to your own feeding program.”
