Sharpen Cow-Handling Skills at PDP Dairy Wellbeing Workshop
Limited space available for plant tours, hands-on learning at Nov. 19, 20 workshop
DAIRY NEWS – Calmer cows, safer teams and more productive herds start with understanding animal behavior. The upcoming PDP Dairy Wellbeing Workshop, presented by Professional Dairy Producers® (PDP), is designed to help dairy teams build stronger stockmanship skills and lameness-prevention strategies through hands-on learning and real-world examples. The workshop also includes an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of a beef-processing plant.
The Dairy Wellbeing Workshop will be held in two repeating one-day sessions on Wed., Nov. 19, and Thurs., Nov. 20, at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay, Wis. Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. with the program concluding at 3:45 p.m. each day. All sessions will be simultaneously translated into Spanish.
Each day’s program will feature:
- Behind the Scenes: American Foods Group Tour
Participants will see firsthand how farm-level care translates to carcass quality and market value. A guided tour and panel discussion will highlight the factors buyers and inspectors evaluate—such as body condition, conformation, and overall animal health.
- Practicing the Principles: Stockmanship in Action
This interactive, discussion-based session is designed to build stronger stockmanship skills through hands-on application. Participants will explore the link between human behavior and animal response, learning practical strategies that promote calmer cows, safer handlers and more productive herds. Facilitator will be Dr. Jennifer Van Os, PhD, Associate Professor and Extension Specialist, University of Wisconsin-Madison.
- Every Step Counts: Act Early for Healthier Cows
Early detection and proactive management of lameness are key to healthier, longer-living cows. In this session, participants will learn evidence-based prevention strategies, early intervention tools, and mobility-assessment techniques for cow comfort and productivity. Facilitator will be Dr. Laura Solano, DVM, PhD, Assistant Professor, UW–Madison School of Veterinary Medicine.
Dairy Wellbeing Workshop is accredited for up to 5.5 Dairy AdvanCE (DACE) continuing education credits and up to 6.0 ARPAS continuing education credits.
Pre-registration is required for the program and space is limited. Learn more and register your team for Dairy Wellbeing Workshop at www.pdpw.org or by contacting PDP at 800-947-7379.
