DAIRY NEWS – Optimal air quality and flow tie directly to cow productivity and profits. The next webinar in the Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW) “Breathe Easy with Ventilation” World Class Webinar Series will address this topic. Dr. Nigel Cook from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine will lead the second webinar discussing mechanical ventilation options on Wednesday, February 15 from noon to 1 p.m CST.
In this webinar, “Do You Cross, Tunnel or Something Else? Mechanical Ventilation Options for Cow Barns”, the respected Dr. Nigel Cook, DVM will analyze the pros and cons of different mechanical ventilation systems, with specific emphasis on cross and tunnel ventilation. Namely, he will use an economic model to highlight the differences between the two systems. Participants will leave the webinar with the first-hand knowledge to make economically sensible choices for their operations to maximize air quality and cow comfort.
The first webinar in the series, “Challenges of Naturally Ventilating Cow Barns”, also led by Dr. Cook, took place on January 11. In it, attendees discovered the best practices for air quality, movement and cooling in naturally ventilated barns and how to optimize financial returns for different ventilation systems.
Dr. Cook is an industry expert who has been providing a milk quality, lameness and facility troubleshooting service to farmers, teaching veterinary students and developing research related to the influence of the environment on hoof and udder health. He also manages the Dairyland Initiative, the guide to welfare friendly dairy cattle housing.
Both of the “Breathe Easy with Ventilation” webinars will be available in the PDPW Webinar Library after they take place. To access this unmatched library of resources, simply go to: http://pdpw.smediahost.net/programs_and_events.php#event_link_235 and click on the “Webinar Library” link.

DAIRY NEWS – Keeping cows healthy and comfortable in both warm and cool seasons with proper ventilation techniques is a key to optimizing cow performance and profitability. Join the Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW) as they present the “Breathe Easy with Ventilation” World Class Webinar Series with Dr. Nigel Cook from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine. This two-part webinar series will be held on Wednesday, January 11 and Wednesday, February 15 from noon to 1 p.m CST.
On the January 11 webinar, titled, “Challenges of Naturally Ventilating Cow Barns”, Dr. Cook will discuss the basic design concepts for effective natural ventilation and examine the challenges of keeping cows cool in these facilities during the summer. The webinar will specifically cover air quality, movement and cooling and provide financial returns for different ventilation systems. All in all, attendees will learn to avoid costly mistakes that limit air intake and ultimately profit potential. It is designed for herd owners, managers and their entire teams.
The second webinar, scheduled for February 15, will focus on mechanical ventilation systems. During “Do you cross, tunnel or something else? Mechanical ventilation options for cow barns”, Dr. Cook will use an economic module to highlight the differences between mechanical ventilation systems. Namely, the pros and cons of cross and tunnel ventilation will be a feature topic of discussion. It is a must for dairy farmers considering renovation or construction, as it will provide a first-hand look at the numbers that make economic sense and optimize cow comfort.
