with PDPW Value-Added Dairy Tour

Oct. 23 Tour to Provide Firsthand Insights to Producers Considering Value-Added Opportunities

DAIRY NEWS – The addition of on-farm processing or other value-added services to a dairy farm’s operation provides both challenges and diversified revenue opportunities.  Understanding the full spectrum of financial, labor and marketing aspects is critical to business success.

The PDPW Value-Added Dairy Tours presented by the Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW) will give dairy farmers and allied industry behind-the-scenes visits to two dairy farms that have successfully added processing and retail markets to their businesses and a roundtable discussion with the farm owners and value-added business consultant. The tour will be held Tues., October 23, departing from Madison, Wis., at 9:30 a.m. and returning by 4:00 p.m. from the Park & Ride, American Center Lot, 5601 Eastpark Blvd., Madison, Wis.

“For many farmers, making a direct connection to our customers is an exciting idea that also brings additional revenue to our businesses, but it can also seem overwhelming and complex,” said Shelly Mayer, dairy farmer in Slinger, Wis. and PDPW Executive Director.  “The Value-Added Dairy Tour is a way to learn from farmers who’ve made the leap and can provide real-world advice and insights on developing a successful diversified business model and how to make it work for your farm family.”

The event will include:
  • Tour a cheese plant and on-farm bio-digester at Crave Brothers Farmstead Classics in Waterloo, Wis.Since 2001, Crave Brothers has delivered milk from their farm through a direct pipeline to their cheese factory to produce popular products including mascarpone, rope string cheese, award-winning mozzarella and more.Learn how they share their farmstead story with consumers and make product and marketing decisions.
  • Tour of Sassy Cow Creamery in Columbus, Wis. With a variety of milk and ice cream products available in their own farmstead creamery store and 75 retail locations in Wisconsin and Illinois, the Baerwolf families have 10 years of experience developing products to meet consumer needs.Tour their farm and creamery and learn what it takes to stay up-to-date with changing preferences.

A roundtable lunch discussion will feature insights from Jim Gage, value-added business consultant; George Crave, Crave Brothers; and James Baerwolf, Sassy Cow Creamery.  Gage will bring perspective on crafting business plans for new value-added opportunities, and help tour participants think about the possibilities for their own farms.
