Three Tiers of Management Training Set for PDPW Dairy Managers Institute
Two-day program features intensive training to build leadership, communication and management skills

DAIRY NEWS – Today’s managers require a combination of both technical and people skills to effectively lead their teams. A two-day focused management training program presented by Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW) is designed to give English and Spanish-speaking managers the tools, strategies and confidence they need to be successful leaders in the dairy industry.
The 2023 Dairy Managers Institute® features three tiers of training that will sharpen the core competencies of all attendees. The two-day workshop will be held Dec. 12-13, 2023, at PDPW Headquarters in Juneau, Wis. The program will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 12 and again from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 13, with simultaneous Spanish translation available for all sessions.
Dr. Becky Stewart Gross, PhD, president and founder of Building Bridges Seminars, will facilitate the tier one training, titled “Lead and manage with insight.” Participants will take a deep dive into the fundamentals of leadership, including distinguishing between the skills of a manager and a leader, and the appropriate scenarios in which to use each set of skills. Dr. Stewart Gross will use an “Insight Inventory” to help attendees identify the strengths of their personality and work styles, and how to make the most of those strengths to lead and manage through change.
“I really like the way the class was taught. Dr. Becky made the content relatable, and I feel we retained more because of it,” said Ryan O’Leary, tier one participant and herd manager at Wargo Acres of Lodi, Wis.
In tier one, Dr. Stewart Gross will also teach participants how to recognize personality styles of others and adapt communication and management strategies to more effectively manage stressful situations.
Tier two will focus on the art of coaching and will be led by Michael Hoffman, founder and owner of Igniting Performance, Inc. Attendees will learn to create strategic approaches to coaching conversations in a variety of situations; they’ll also gain insights on delivering meaningful feedback.

The third tier, “Nail the financials and negotiations,” will be facilitated by Dr. Kevin Bernhardt, PhD, agribusiness professor at UW-Platteville and farm management specialist with UW-Extension and Center for Dairy Profitability, and Linda Swindling, JD, CSP. The focus will be on clearly understanding the financial fundamentals of the dairy business and exploring negotiation styles.
