PDPW Presents Webinar: “Making the Right Decisions with Cover Crops”

DAIRY NEWS – The Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW) is pleased to announce their next World Class Webinars session “Making the Right Decisions With Cover Crops” featuring Matthew Ruark, Associate Professor at the UW-Madison, Department of Soil Science. This webinar is scheduled for Wednesday, August 17 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. CDT.

The webinar is open to the public and all interested in crop decision making and lead management including dairy farm owners, CEOs and COOs, feed managers, herdsman, industry experts, key consultants, nutritionists and other industry professionals. This advanced look at cover crop management will focus on the goals and outcomes of cover crop decision making, in regards to research, efficiencies and other economic considerations.

Cover crop expert, Matt Ruark will help attendees discover the pros and cons of cover crops while interpreting new research compiled throughout the Midwest and Wisconsin. During this one-hour live webinar, Ruark will specifically cover: erosion, nutrient capture, forage generation and understanding the climate in order to make realistic and obtainable goals.

Matt Ruark runs a fully integrated research and extension program at UW-Madison. Priorities for his Nutrient Cycling and Agroecosystems Laboratory are to: (1) improve the understanding of carbon and nitrogen cycling in dairy production systems, (2) evaluate nitrogen fertilizer sources across different soil types and cropping systems to improve production and efficiency, (3) assess the role of soil physical and biological measurement for use in nutrient management planning, and (4) evaluate the benefits of cover crop for crop production and soil health. His current research projects regarding cover crops are focused on nitrogen supply of legume and brassica cover crops, use of cover crops with fall manure applications, interseeding cover crops into corn, soybean and wheat and use of cover crops on sandy soil.

Pre-registration is required and due by August 3. Participants can watch the webinar live on the designated date and time, or watch the recorded session.
