Growing Need for On-Farm Training for Industry Professionals

DAIRY NEWS – With less than two percent of the U.S. population living on farms, it requires a significant number of non-farm professionals to work in food production and related industries.  In fact, 22 million people are involved in producing, processing, selling and trading the national’s food and fiber industries, while only 5.6 million people reside on a farm or ranch.

A training offered by Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW), Agricultural Professional Partnerships® (APPs), is designed to provide on-farm training to industry professionals with limited background or experience in modern production agriculture.  The training will enhance professionals’ on-farm understanding so they can be more effectual in their roles, and will provide a network of resources and experts for future farm-related questions.

The APPs training will be held July 25-27, 2017, with participants departing from Madison, Wisconsin, each day for on-site training at modern dairy farms in southern Wisconsin.  Transportation will depart the Crowne Plaza Hotel – Madison, 4401 E. Washington Ave., Madison, Wis., each day at 9:00 a.m. and return at 5:00 p.m.

The training includes three modules that will combine classroom training and on-farm experience. Each is designed to provide an overview of key elements of modern dairy farming and includes a resource guide with reference material.
  • Fundamentals of Dairy Science explores the dairy cow – common terms, vocabulary and facts around breeds, anatomy, production components and traits, genetic selection, culling decisions, reproduction management, calf care and obstetrics, vaccinations, bio security, food safety and beyond.
  • Farming, Fields & Food Fundamentals highlights manure management, water quality, crop production, ration composition and formulation, forage and economic considerations, harvest variety, cycle and yields, and overall stewardship and conservation management and techniques.
  • Fundamentals of Dairy Business Management analyzes how farmers get paid, financial statements, milk check income and deductions, cost of production, economic measures, drivers and obstacles, risk and milk marketing management, market access, asset valuation, capital valuation, debt structure and more.
Space is limited and program registration includes transportation, on-farm experience, access to training experts and educational resources, refreshments and lunch. To learn more about the PDPW Agricultural Professional Partnerships (APPs) training and to register, visit www.pdpw.org or contact PDPW at 1-800-947-7379.
