Growing Need for Agribusiness On-Farm Training
Full-immersion APPs Experience held June 18-20, 2019, Madison, Wis.

DAIRY NEWS – With less than two percent of the U.S. population living on farms, it requires a significant number of non-farm professionals to work in food production and related industries.  In fact, 22 million people are involved in producing, processing, selling and trading the national’s food and fiber industries, while only 5.6 million people reside on a farm or ranch.

A training offered by Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW), Agricultural Professional Partnerships® (APPs) fills that need.  APPs is an on-farm full-immersion training for industry professionals with limited background or experience in modern production agriculture.

The three-day APPs training experience will be held June 18-20, 2019, with participants departing from Madison, Wis. each day for on-site training at three diverse dairy farms.  The group will depart the Crowne Plaza Hotel – Madison, 4401 E. Washington Ave., Madison, Wis., each day at 9:00 a.m. and return at 5:00 p.m.

The experience covers three key areas of modern dairy farming, which will combine classroom training and on-farm experience.

  • Fundamentals of Dairy Science explores the dairy cow – culling standards, pain management, best care practices, transportation, genetic selection, reproduction management, calf care and obstetrics, vaccinations, bio security, food safety, labeling claims, and beyond.
  • Farming, Fields & Food Fundamentals highlights environmental regulations, manure management, water quality, soil heath, GMOs, crop systems, ration formulation, economic considerations, and overall stewardship and conservation management methods.
  • Fundamentals of Dairy Business Management analyzes how farmers get paid, market access, financial statements, cost of production, economic measures, risk and milk marketing management, asset and capital valuation, debt structure and more.

Space is limited and pre-registration is required.  Registration includes transportation, on-farm experience, access to training experts and educational resources, refreshments and lunch.
