DAIRY NEWS – Four Wisconsin dairy farm families will open the doors to their farms for an evening of conversations, tours and ice cream as part of the 2019 ACE On-the-Farm Twilight Meetings to be held August 26, 27, 28 and 29, 2019.

Each evening, the meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a farm tour and ice cream. A facilitated discussion will follow till 8:30 p.m. and focus on key issues such as water quality, community development, resource management, changes in agriculture and rural communities, roads and transportation, and other critical topics relevant to attendees.

The 2019 ACE On-the-Farm Twilight Meetings will be hosted on:

  • Mon., Aug. 26, at Soaring Eagle Dairy, 10219 County Road F, Newton, Wis.  The dairy farm started in a 60-cow tie stall barn by Jim and Sandie Fitzgerald in 1980 has grown over the years to add more family members, cows and facilities. The Fitzgeralds’ son Nick and daughters Julie Maurer, Kelly Goehring and Stacy Klotz are now part of the management team that cares for 1,200 dairy cows.  The farm also features an on-site grain storage system that allows better control of the quality and moisture level of corn fed to the cows.

  • Tue., Aug. 27, at Night Hawk Dairy, 118899 Eau Pleine Rd., Stratford, Wis. Cousins Jim and Chris Leick are the third generation on their family dairy farm that is well known for its elite calf care program.  The dairy is now home to 1,000 cows and 650 calves and heifers. The farm also features the Elmwood Ballroom, which was located on the second story of their grandfather’s milking parlor and would host performances of the family orchestra.

  • Wed., Aug. 28, at Son-Bow Farms,W2686 390th Ave., Maiden Rock, Wis.  Jay and Kristi Richardson along with three shareholder partners own the 1,400-cow dairy farm.  Son-Bow Farms was the first in Wisconsin to install a Nu-Way nutrient concentration system which features ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis processes to handle manure on the farm.  The system has reduced cost and helped maintain cow health and milk quality.

  • Thu., Aug. 29, at Stone-Front Farm, 5027 Hwy 81 East, Lancaster, Wis.  Elam and Barbara Buttles moved their dairy farm from Racine County to their current location in 1997.  Today, their son Andy and his wife Lyn Buttles are co-owners of the dairy that milks 1,250 cows.  The dairy is well known for registered cattle and regularly hosts university groups and visitors from around the world.
