Another Hot, Dry Week in Wisconsin Farm Fields
Wisconsin Ag Connection - Continued warm, dry conditions allowed Wisconsin farmers to work in the fields during the past week. The Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service noted in its weekly crop/weather report that growers had more than six days of favorable weather to harvest hay, oats,
winter wheat, and processing vegetables.
Topsoil moisture condition levels declined to 10 percent very short, 23 percent short, 63 percent adequate and four percent surplus.
As of Sunday, about 69 percent of the statewide corn crop was silking--four days ahead of last year and nearly a week better than the five-year average. Five percent of the crop is now in the dough stage. Reporters estimate the corn to be 75 percent good to
excellent.
Soybeans are 78 percent blooming, which is two days behind last year, but six days ahead of normal. Forty-seven percent of the beans are setting pods already. The crop remained at 72 percent good to excellent for a second consecutive week.
Farmers have 15 percent of their oats combined and 62 percent of the winter wheat off the fields.
And 92 percent of the second cutting of alfalfa hay is complete, eight days ahead of last year and seven days ahead of the average. The third crop is 25 percent complete.
