Green Bay Area Also Hosting Industrial Hemp Meeting

Wisconsin Ag Connection - The University of Wisconsin-Extension office in Brown County is offering an educational meeting this month in Green Bay to help interested growers learn about the rules, regulations and other basics for growing industrial hemp. The forum is for farmers, agronomists, agricultural lenders, agency staff, educators and others who will play a role in the production of the crop.

Organizers say the meeting takes place February 25 at 1:00 p.m. at the Neville Public Museum. Those planning to grow industrial hemp have until March 1 to apply for the required licensing and registration.

Jennifer Heaton-Amrhein from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture's Hemp Research Pilot Program will cover requirements for obtaining license and registration and give an update on results from last year’s first research pilot program. Larry Konopacki, general counsel to the Wisconsin Hemp Alliance, will also discuss the legalities of growing industrial hemp. Agronomics, including variety selection, establishment, crop culture, harvesting, and post-harvest issues along with economics/profitability both within and beyond the United States, will be covered by Dr. David Williams, agronomist at University of Kentucky.

Meanwhiel, there will also be a panel of local growers who will provide their perspectives on last year and answer questions.
