Strengthen Coaching Skills to Build Effective Teams at PDPW Dairy Managers Institute
Two-day program for English and Spanish speakers set for Dec. 12-13, 2023

DAIRY NEWS – Moving into a management role means transitioning from doing a job to being able to teach others and effectively lead and motivate teams. The 2023 Dairy Managers Institute® hosted by Professional Dairy Producers® (PDPW) will help new and experienced managers build their skills in coaching, delivering feedback and much more.
Spanish and English-speaking managers will each choose one of three tiers of training to complete at the 2023 Dairy Managers Institute®, all designed to sharpen the core competencies of managers. The two-day workshop will be held Dec. 12-13, 2023, at PDPW Headquarters in Juneau, Wis. The program will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 12 and again from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 13, with simultaneous Spanish translation available for all sessions.
Michael Hoffman, founder and owner of Igniting Performance, Inc., will bring his enthusiasm and bold style to the tier two session, “Master the art of coaching.” He will build on the skills learned in tier one, and provide life-changing strategies for managers to lead teams and projects of all sizes and be equipped to initiate a transformation in team culture.
“As someone who is already in somewhat of a senior position, I attended this program to learn how to teach these management and coaching concepts to others,” said Clay Reese, director of technical services at BoviSync LLC, Fond du Lac, Wis., and a former tier two participant. “Michael Hoffman provided great examples that we could take back to our teams and put to use right away.”
Hoffman will focus on coaching skills, including creating strategic approaches for management coaching conversations, identifying personal and practical needs within a coaching interaction, and understanding and delivering meaningful feedback.  The session will provide managers with the tools to give employees a greater sense of ownership and generate buy-in to action plans for projects large and small.
Dr. Becky Stewart Gross, PhD, president and founder of Building Bridges Seminars, will facilitate the tier one training, “Lead and manage with insight.” Participants will take a deep dive into the fundamentals of leadership, including distinguishing between the skills of a manager and a leader, and the appropriate scenarios in which to use each set of skills.
The third tier, “Nail the financials and negotiations,” will be facilitated by Dr. Kevin Bernhardt, PhD, agribusiness professor at UW-Platteville and farm management specialist with UW-Extension and Center for Dairy Profitability, and Linda Swindling, JD, CSP. The focus will be on clearly understanding the financial fundamentals of the dairy business and exploring negotiation styles.
